The peaceful loving god that you think is in the bible is only on maybe 20 pages of the whole thing. Mostly, god is portrayed as vengeful and destructive. He wiped out the whole world except Noah - pretty drastic for a loving god.
Have read of the 10 commandments. The first 4 are all about god and how to treat him. Pretty self centered eh?
Abject devotion to religion is just a crutch because you dont have any belief in yourself, your family, or in society.

Everyone is different, and what you consider "sin" and "wrong" is not seen that way to everyone. Not everyone shares the same faith, and there are all types of factions of each faith. Besides no one is perfect, and everyone makes mistakes. making mistakes and learning from them is a good thing. As hard as I try to work towards my goals I know that the road has plenty of obstacles and I take what I percieve to be the best possible action at the time, and sometimes it works out, other times it doesn't. Oh, and not to sound mean or anything, but do you own a mirror? Vanity is a sin.

It's the nature of fallen mankind (humanity) to sin. Many of us who have been regenerated through the Holy Spirit find this to be offensive but only by the strength and grace of God through Jesus Christ are we able to overcome the urges to commit sin.
We all have sinned (Romans 3:23) and chances are we will do so again if we're not real careful. (James 4:1, I John 1:8)
Pray for sinners. Be a witness and an example of the goodness of God.

I don't think people start out thinking, "Hmm. How can I sin today?" So I don't think they're trying. I think what happens is people are people and they give in to their natural instincts and are just being human. Not only that, but sin is subjective. What you might think is a sin, may not be to someone else. For example, sex. We all have the drive. Some people think it's sinful, others think it's natural and healthy. Lying. Some people think it's okay to tell a little lie now and again. Others think it's wrong under any circumstance. Basically I'm saying what you see and think is bad - others may not.

What do you mean "work towards good than going towars things of this world"?? Sorry, atheists believe that the universe that exists is the only one we can exert any force upon. So as we see it, we can only do good and kind things in the here and now. And things that exist are worth caring about, like actual children dying from AIDS in Africa and actual women being oppressed in the Middle East and in America, and actual people of homosexuality being oppressed in the Middle East and in America.
We believe in being good for its own sake, and letting everyone agree on what is right and what is wrong; instead of books written thousands of years ago and then interpreted and altered from their original form by men who lived hundreds of years ago. Any kind of sex before marriage is not evil, ingesting alcohol is not evil. Muhammed (yeah, of the Quran fame) married a 9-year-old girl. Job had sex with his daughter. Abraham would have murdered his son. If you ignore where the concepts come from, and try to search within yourself what FEELS wrong and right, you will realise that sin does not matter. The bible preaches plenty of things that i think you would consider evil >> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internal_consistency_and_the_Bible#General_disparity_of_content
Have fun, your parents aren't right about everything. Just because they believe in God doesn't mean it's all true. What about kids with Atheist parents? Surely they have just as good a reason to dis-believe in a God as you do to believe in one? Ditto Muslim, Jewish, Buddhist, Hindu, Sikh children. Forget sinning, use your own personal moral compass. Abraham thought God told him to kill his own son, how did he know that this wasn't just a psychotic hallucination? And we're told we can know an evil spirit from a good one by whether or not it disagrees with the bible, but by that maxim a hallucination to kill one's son must be from God!
Things of this world are all that exist, let's try to make this world a better place rather than do evil things to get into an imaginary one.

Acually, it's easier to disobey God.
To be a good Christian (or whatever you happen to be,) there are always at least SOME rules you have to follow.
But to be either a really bad Christian or just not religious at all, you can do whatever you want.
In the short term, the latter sounds more attractive. But a lot of people ignore the long term benefits of believing in God and being a good Christian. (or, again, whatever you happen to be.)

I think people like what is fun and easy for them. Its always harder to avoid sin and to live your life in accordance to your religious disciplines, but in the end it is far more rewarding... I think that's the problem with your theory- I dont think it is easier for people to do the right thing, it is easier for people to cave in to desires and to cave into easy ways out. I often think of these things.

What, for example, is the advantage of having sin and guilt as the fundamental principles on which one worships? Is it better to live by emulating someone's teaching, or to find all manner of reasons to suffer and find fault in most everything -- in effect to bask in the twin cauldrons of Woundology and Scapegoatology? The latter such worship is in itself clearly dysfunctional

It is because of the stain of original sin. People can be pretty evil and had it not been for the Lord Jesus who ransomed us we would all perish. It is solely due to God's grace that man can do good. And it is up to us to accept or refuse this grace. Even a person who tries to be holy tends to fall into sin from time to time.
This causes us to acknowledge our weaknesses and the fact that we need God's help to persevere in good.
In the Lord's prayer we pray'....give us this day our daily bread....' this doesn.t mean just food and money but evrything else, all that we need, to live good lives.

well because we are not perfect and have a nature geared to the desire to sin... while God would be the best route to take... because Sin has seperated us from God, so we have broken communication and have a hard time keeping our faith and remembering or believing that he is there when we can't see him, or directly communicate with him... it is a faith oriented issue... anyway thing would be easier, but they aren't and we had to be constantly focus and keep a solid relationship.... anyway good luck keep showing the light into your dark world...
