I have horribly flat feet and shoe inserts do nothing. I find many articles on things they can do for flat feet, and they all say surgery is possible, but it should be a last resort. But thats usually all they say since most of the articles are also from people wanting to sell shoe inserts. Anyone know why it they say that or how effective the surgery is?

Please note... i have been unsing inserts for years. I have an appointment to see a pediatrist, but thats weeks away. So please don't make comments about that...it doesn't answer the question! Thank you

The reason it bothers me is because my feet always hurt, i can't run anymore because it hurts too much, and my knee has been swollen for no apparent reason for a week. All of this is a result of having flat feet. And im only 22. and until recently loved running.

Im flat footed and i dont seem to have any problems. I always try to correct my steps when i walk now after seeing how major flat footers look like they are going to have ankle problems when they are older. Buy shoes without such big inserts, and work your way up. Im in track, and only difference between me and the other runners is that im more likely to get shin splints, which actually happened to me a while back. My father told me he used to also be flat footed, then he just corrected himself and now he walks regular naturally.

I have this same problem. My knees are always hurting from the the over pronation. And I'm 21. There is different kinds of surgery. They have to break bones and completely restructure the foot for major surgery, it's a 6month recovery with a full leg cast , and it's done one leg at a time. So, a year recovery in reality. They have other surgeries , where it's not that extreme and you can walk around the same day of surgery. It all really depends on what the podiatrist would recommend for your feet. Definitely worth looking into.

why would you like to correct flat feet? Do they hurt? Unless you are hurting you should not think about it...when body grows with flat feet body does adjust accordingly..i have been a classical Indian dancer and i have steep arches with my weight gain my arches are causing trouble..my sister who is 20 yrs older to me has flat feet and she didn't have any such problem even with weight gain...
With surgery you have 50-50 chances..
Go to a sports medicine or therapy person might help

What is the problem with having flat feet man, I'm flat footed and it benefits me... A lot of black people are flat footed because black people, and their history, is very active. Black people do what a lot, run a lot, they play a lot of sports. Of course, this was because of evolution thousands of years ago... Now they evolved into flat feet and it does make them better runners. Just from running the feet kept getting flatter and flatter and now the are flat footed.

I have flat feet and I'm an excellent runner. Take it from me that getting surgery would be pretty useless. It would just hurt and give you an arched foot... big deal, so not worth it.
