I have a male chihuahua who will be one year old in May. When will he change over to adult dog food? Will he get sick when we change his food?

Most dogs don't need the extra protein found in puppy food after 6 to 8 months and it is safe to change to an adult food after that time. Ask your vet for his or her opinion, as your dog might have a condition that we are not aware of.

When you change, stick to a high quality food. I don't believe in those "Science" foods, and my dogs didn't like them well either. A high quality food such as Purina One is just as good. The biggest factor is to change gradually, mixing more and more of the new food in with the old food until you stop using the old food all together. Changing too fast can upset their system.

He shouldn't get sick if you change over his food. The person who suggested mixing the foods has the right idea. You should mix them and gradually phase out the old food. You can change over now if you'd like. Just make sure it's the little bites dog food. Small dogs need smaller pieces to eat.

yes you change his food over when he is a year old. i will take about a week to do this. you do it by feed 90% puppy food and 10% new food. then each day add about another 10% new food and take away about 10% of the old food.

It should be fine to change it now.
Change it gradually. Mix it with its old food and new food.
After you run out of the old food just keep feeding him his new food.

Change your dog's food when he is two, and when you change it not this may, but next may, change it gradually. I suggest Nutro, dogs love it and it's natural.
