There is no legally free version of OS 9, but you can get Classic support for free. Classic support allows you to run OS 9 applications in OS X. If your PowerMac came with Jaguar (10.2) or Panther (10.3), you may already have Classic support. Look in the Classic pane of your System Preferences. If you do not already have it installed, it should be on your Jaguar or Panther installation disks or the restore disks that came with your computer. Unfortunately, if your PowerMac came with Tiger (10.4), Classic support was not bundled with it, but it will still install and run on your computer if you can get a hold on it. Have a friend with an older Mac? Ask for their disks.
