I just received a letter telling me that I passed the written exam for my local police department (to be a police officer). The next step is an oral interview.

I haven't interviewed for a job in over 5 years and I have NEVER interviewed for a Law Enforcement position before. Does anyone have any tips to help me get through my oral interview with flying colors?

Thanks to all!

Hey Jeff....when it's your family member that gets raped or murdered, when YOUR kids get into drugs and gangs...who are YOU going to call?

Just be yourself. Joke around a little. Don't act to serious. Be prepared to answer some silly questions. When I interviewed for the sheriffs department, they asked me why a tennis ball has fuzz on it.
Aside from the silly questions pay most attention to these:
II'm sure they will ask you what your "future goals consist of", "what you plan on doing with the department"? Also will ask you the "what would you do if you were in this situation" questions. "Why should we hire you?" Also be prepared to explain the broken window theory also. That one seems to be a common question.

Good Luck

Write out questions you believe they will ask you and be prepared. They will ask things such as this:

Will you be able to use deadly force when the time comes:
your answer should be a confident YES, and that's it

What character traits do you believe are necessary to be an effective police officer:
your answer should include the following; communication skills is the best character trait and will be needed all the time to resolve conflict along with common sense and compassion.

When would it be ok to break laws in the line of duty?
your answer should include, when it is necessary to protect the life or well being of citizens and fellow officers or myself, laws such as traffic laws and such

Why do you want to become a police officer:
do not answer the typical because I want to help people, come up with something original and a real reason why, it's the same as saying I'm a good people person in a regular job interview

that's all i have for now...

Not if your intent is to bust all the people that were involved in drugs in your high school and you were left out of the loop. It always happens like that. Get even for the hell you got from the class elite. Know that 50% of law inforcement people do join the local force to serve and protect the public. The other 50% is there to even the score towards personal past indiscretions. Please tell us why you want to join the police force. Know that this is a conscience decision on your part and you are well aware of the risks that are involved. I don't want want to be asked to give you an award for doing what you were trained to do in the first place at tax payers expense. Know that if I or anyone else had the chance or the opportunity to save someone, we would! I don't think I'd be there expecting an award for valor knowing full well that what you did, could've been done by someone else. The question is what is your motivation? Are you in for the $$$ or are you there to serve??

It varies widely from agency to agency. I have had oral boards with local, state and federal agencies. I can say that all have had situational dilemas that gauge your reasoning ability, fairness and quick thinking. I would suggest against using humor in any of your answers, but do be personable when speaking with your interviewers. They are generally looking that you don't say "I would shoot him in the face" or "If he said that, I would beat him down." Most importantly, be yourself, as they have had people lie to them on a daily basis - they'll know if you're being dishonest. Good luck!

It depends on your state. if CA I can lead you to some possible resources. Otherwise, check at your local bookstore and see if there are any books on preparing for a police officer entrance examination.

great another prick to the streets. oral interviews are easy alls you have to do is be real honest that is the biggest thing they dont care about what you did its who you are now and dont say things to get yourself tied up like you like to help people but yet youve never done nothing to help someone. such as volunteer work and what not.

your mental disposition will be questioned. situational questions will be asked that will be centered around the " what if" ... . your ability to use some quick judgment will also be queried.
