* Many animals native to the Ozarks make their homes here. These include numerous minnows and darters, southern redback salamander, pickerel frog, northern watersnake, pileated woodpecker, belted kingfisher, muskrat and bobcat. Some recent additions to the area include the nine-banded armadillo, which has migrated north in the last 10 years, and river otter, which was reintroduced recently and is doing well. Some unique animals found here include the eastern hellbender and the Niangua darter, the latter of which is listed on the endangered species list.
