Any soapy water will kill fleas, but it's not best to use shampoos designed for humans. I know some people who have used baby shampoo, it is gentler than adult shampoo, it's still not the best to use. Dog shampoos are best. If you just need to use it for tonight, since you just brought the dog home and haven't got anything else on hand, it won't hurt the dog this one time. You don't want to make it a habit of using it though because it will dry out the skin.

Yes, human shampoo will kill the fleas...but not the eggs. Any soapy water will kill fleas. Human shampoos aren't very good to use on dogs because they will dry out their skin. You can use a baby shampoo, but there are a lot of mixed feelings about that too, some vets will say yes to that, others say no. Being that you just got the dog, you've probably not had an opportunity to get all the dog supplies you need, so human shampoo will do for the time being. It is best to plan on using dog shampoos for future use.

Yes and No. Fleas actually prefer animals like a cat or a dog to feed off of. If a flea has a choice between your blood and the blood of your dog, they will choice your dog, but what happens is sometimes you can have an infestation of fleas so they will just jump on any host "Dog, cat, human" to get their meal. Best way to tell that you have fleas in your home is to look at your dog's tummy usually around the back end or even their butt itself. You can see one or two of two things: 1) Flea "Dirt". It's tiny hard pieces just like dirt on your dogs skin which is actually flea poop or 2) You will see little black dots almost move around which is the flea itself. Sometimes you will not see the flea itself but almost always see flea dirt. If you don't physically see fleas but see flea dirt then your animal or home has fleas. You could also try a flea comb or a lice comb. You can get them pretty cheap at any Pet store and some regular grocery stores have them. It's a small comb with the teeth small and very close together and then brush your dog with the comb. That's a good way to see fleas or flea dirt. So yes, fleas will bite humans but they do not prefer them. If you find fleas or flea dirt then you want to get your animal on some kind of flea preventative like Frontline, Revolution or Advantage. Maybe buy some flea shampoo and give your dog a bath but that only lasts a few days. Run your sweeper over the carpet. Everyday is usually the best option and if your vacuum has the bags that collect everything you sweep up, immediately throw the bag away when you are finished so the fleas can't get back into the house. One more tip that I found online awhile ago to get rid of fleas in your home is to leave one day for a few hours taking all your animals with you, close all windows and crank up your heat, usually around 90 or so degrees F. Fleas die in heat that high and it is suppose to bake them. Hope this helps

Getting rid of the fleas is more important than saving a dime. You need shampoo or powder specific to fleas. Regular shampoo alone will not do it.

You should also invest in dog shampoo. Their coats are different than our hair and scalp and to keep their coat nice, pay the couple of cents extra and get shampoo for dogs. Also remeber that you would not use regular shampoo on a baby, partially due to eye irritation. The same applies for dogs.

Does Shampoo Kill Fleas

In my experience, most don't. I've used VO5 and others, and recieved no results. However, I used Selsum Blue dandruff shampoo and that seemed to get rid of them for a few days, but they were back . . . so that may mean that you'd have to bathe your dog regularly, like humans do? But in the end, with the cost of the shampoo and your time bathing your dog all of the time - you're better off getting a flea treatment.

No. It will clean him up for the moment but you really need to get a product specifically for a dog of your dogs age / weight. Human shampoo will dry out the skin and can cause problems to an animal but if it's all you've got in a pinch it will help. It will not kill fleas though. Fleas are tough. Good luck.

A bath with human shampoo will kill the fleas (not the eggs) that are on the dog right now. However, human shampoo can irritate and dry out the dog's skin. You should only use dog shampoo on him.

Human shampoo has too high of a PH for dogs, it can dry out their skin, or even make their skin burn. I will however let you know that you can use baby shampoo, and the first time you use it, it will killl fleas, but it doesn't work after that.
