After my dog run and plays for a while he starts wheezing and coughing. I'm not sure if there is such a thing as dog asthma, but any info would help. After he calms down for awhile, and gets a drink he seems fine, it just happens after he has been running. He also seems to get short of breath faster than other dogs. We have another dog who runs just the same, and doesn't even seem winded. Our dogs are very healthy, and not over weight... what should we do?

Yes, they can also "overdo it" just like humans.

My boxer has the same condition. It happens more when it's hot outside and she's really running hard. I noticed when she goes into the ocean (we live on the beach) it cools her off and the wheezing goes away. I took her to my vet who explained it either as allergies (asthma) or this condition that is common with boxers, pugs, bulldogs (dogs with squished noses). I can't remember the name of the condition, but it has to do with the top of their mouth swelling and making it more difficult for them to breathe. He said to try to keep her cool when she is running, which is easy for us because of the ocean. Perhaps you could try to keep some cold water near? Also, I have her on some antihistamines once a day, as I've noticed that helps a bit. Good luck!

I would certainly have his checked out by a vet. I was a Vet Tech for 18 years and very saw a dog with asthma, many, many cats, but not one dog. That doesn't mean they can't, but it must be rare.

Yes. My friends dog had the same sort of problem, they gave him antibiotics and streroids to help with the inflamation. So take your dear pooch to the vet and have him checked out.
