I would only suggest downloading Limewire If you have a mac computer. This is because mac has such good virus protection that if you accidently download a virus, your computer wont be messed up. There is a chance that you will be safe if you use Limewire on a Windows computer but I wouldn't risk your whole computer being F*cked up! I guess the best thing to do if you do have a PC is to buy the music, hate to say it but its the safest option ;)

Since using Limewire (or anything else) to download music without paying for it is illegal, and illegal networks are infested with viruses, I'd say answer these questions:

1. Since the RIAA is filing lawsuits against people for illegal downloading, do you have about $10,000.00 in the bank that you can access to pay the fine off easily? Some people have paid less in fines (like http://www.cnn.com/2003/TECH/internet/09/09/music.swap.settlement/) and some have paid more ( like http://news.zdnet.com/2100-9588_22-5991531.html), but $10,000.00 is about average.

2. Do you have the time, ability and willingness to completely rebuild your computer in case of a serious virus? Are you positive you don't have any passwords, personal information, bank account information or credit card numbers on the machine that could be stolen? Do you have a good lawyer in case your computer is infected and becomes a bot and is used for something like storing child porn? (see http://download.nai.com/products/mcafee-avert/WhitePapers/DmitryGryaznov_VB2005.pdf , http://delivery.acm.org/10.1145/1180000/1177124/p327-kalafut.pdf?key1=1177124&key2=1790703711&coll=&dl=acm&CFID=15151515&CFTOKEN=6184618 and http://www.independent.org/newsroom/article.asp?id=1894)

3. Are you the owner and sole user of the computer? After all, you don't want your parents/spouse/roomie to file bankruptcy to pay your legal bills or get hauled off to proson because you illegally downloaded a file that used your computer for something even more illegal.

If you can answer yes to all those questions, go for it.

With most P2P's today, just remember they are breeding grounds for viruses and other malware.

Always scan what you downloaded before opening or playing the file.

Remember also that all P2P sites now require TMI so if the RIAA comes after them, they can direct them to you. As long as you keep your d/l's legal, you will not have any problems.

Limewire and Bearshare seem to be the most popular. You can also go to http://www.download.com to find other P2P's and choose what you feel will suit your needs.

Yes. It is the most popular P2P and therefore has more things you can download (because more people are using it)
