Being American is in the heart. Its not just about where you live, but HOW you live. If you believe in equal rights and freedom and are willing to stand up for that against our oppressors, then you are an American through and through. Dont worry about what someone else tells you. If you can shout it out then you have no worries at all.
Im an American and dam proud of it!
GOD BLESS THE USA AND OUR TROOPS ABROAD

Since your question is inane, I will respond, instead to Eric W who claims America has no culture of it's own. I realize you may be a product of the public school system but there is an American culture.
It is the culture of the Rugged Individualist. Ordinary people doing extraordinary things. Self-reliant, entrepreneurial free spirits who can do what other people think is impossible. The land of opportunity. The land where every natural born child can one day be President. The land of the free. The home of the brave.

is it because there are so many different type of Americans today. it used to be one type of American and that was a LOYAL, DEVOTED ,ALL IN ONE [ no-matter where you came from ] PERSON WHO STOOD UP FOR THE AMERICAN PRINCIPALS AND WOULD FIGHT TO THE DEATH TO DEFEND YOUR RIGHT TO SAY AND DO ALMOST ANYTHING YOU WANT TO DO. they still exist today but they are not in supply as they were.we are fractured into too many little self interest groups that only want for them self and might help one or two others.there are Irish Americans,Afro Americans , Asian Americans,Mexican Americans,Anglo Americans,Europe Americans .so which American do you think you are? if you have to ask that question why is it hard to believe i am an Americam then you have to ask what type of American am i. WE ARE THE SAME AS WE USED TO BE WE ONLY THINK OF OUR OWN LITTLE GROUP AND NOT AS ONE BIG UNIT AS WE SHOULD BE.

Mainly because the schools do not teach patriotism. Teach us to be proud of being an American. Sad.

Because humans do not remember when they were born. Thus, you could have been born in the U.S.S.R., and people could have told you otherwise. Also, because this is unlikely, you probably suffer from paranoia- which would be a better explanation for your doubts.

Because it's getting harder and harder to even want to call yourself American for fear of violent death or social alienation in the international community.
