What does it mean? I know literally it means good, but as a phone greeting it doesn't make much sense to me. Please lemme know!

Mexicans answer the phone with the word "bueno". The reason is historical. Telephones were installed during the time of the Mexican revolution (1910-1923). Lines were frequently cut as a result of the wars between the various factions. Bueno means that the person answering hears that there is a good connection.

In South America, many phones were installed by the Swedish Erikson Company, and the French word "Halo (Aló) was used. This is used by many Spaniards as well.

In the Caribbean, they normally answer with Diga (speak) or Digame (talk to me) or Oigo (I hear). This is used by many Spaniards as well.

You will find that the words used on the phone as well as telephone etiquette varies greatly from country to country.

They don't say "weno," some answer the phone by saying "bueno." But it's pronounced with kind of a b/w sound....boo-weh-no...but really fast together. Depending on where they're from they might even answer "Quien habla?" (Sounds like key-in ah-blah). Which means "who's speaking?" It may sound rude when translated to English but believe me, it's not at all. Then occasionally you'll hear some Spanish speakers answer the phone by saying, hello, ello, hola, alo (ah-low). These are just Spanish variations from the English way to answer of hello. If you've ever watched any t.v. shows in Spanish you'll see them say hello or hola a lot when they answer the phone.

Bueno is an idiomatic equivalent to hello. It is taught from childhood that is how to answer the phone. If things had gone differently in an argument between Edison and Alexander G Bell, We would answer the phone with "Ahoy"

Hope that helps

it's like saying "hello?" usually you say it with question emphasis at the end.

It's short for "buenos dias" or "buenas tardes".
We also answer with "diga" or "alo?"

Actually, it means well (many people use it to mean good, but that is not what it means). It is just a cultural thing. It's the same reason most people in the U.S. answer with hello.
