Infantry the place to go when you want rank. It's no secret that the Infantry is where the rank is.

Getting rank in the Infantry comes pretty easy. You score high on the APFT, score good on marksmanship, go to all the military schools you can get into especially the EIB-Course, Jump School and Ranger School. Show initiative, calm and courage under fire, leadership and an ability to gain respect and control of your men. Demonstrate your ability to be a good tactician, and most of all, see combat.

In the Marine Corps, E-1 to E-3 is a given unless you get non-req'd. To pick up E-4 (Cpl [NCO]) you must meet the cut score whatever it may be for that quarter. Your cut score consist of rifle qual., PFT score, avg. Pro's/Con's in TIG, TIS, TIG, MCI's, education courses, and some other things. You can get meritorously promoted but you must have all these qualification and more such as reading the required books for that rank and you must be a squared-away Marine knowing your basic Infantry knowledge, the ability to lead, etc.

Being a Grunt, promotions are hard to come by. There are many Grunts and the branch of service can only promote so many to every rank.

There is the automatic promotions from E-1 thru E-4. Those come with time in service. Sometimes waivers are involved when it comes to being promoted to E-4. These would be given by the 1SG upon the discretion of the Platoon Sergeant. They involve either Time in Grade or Time in Service. To Sergeant, and Staff Sergeant the Soldier goes in front of a promotion board which consists of 1SGs and a Command Sergeant Major. Questions are given and answered and then they place point values on how and what you answer. They will also look at your uniform, the way you present yourself, and how you answer all questions. The more points the better as the Army sets point values on how many they want to promote. The points come from the board, awards, school (civilian and military) marksmanship,the physical training test, and correspondence courses. From Sergeant First Class through Command Sergeant Major, Department of the Army makes the selections based on the Enlisted Record Brief, and Non-Commissioned Officer Evaluation Reports.

Through Time in Service, Time in Grade, and excelling in your chosen expertise. If you think that you are a "grunt" then it will show to those that are in the job of promoting. (NoGo)
If you take extra training in particular jobs like ordinance or demolitions, and extra courses to obtain a college degree (such as online) The people who are in your chain of command will notice and think of you when it is time for new people to fill old shoes.
I suggest taking some online courses such as business management or middle management.

it depends on your branch of service. in the navy you gain rank by going to tech. school in your profession. then you go to the fleet,and get time in rank ,also you take qualification courses, and if there is a need for your rank in your job, and you didnt get into too much trouble,you get it

show up to work everyday, go to iraq when its your turn and dont get arrested for a felony.that should get u E-6 in about 5 years.
after that its a crap shoot....a bunch of old SGMs looking at your file in texas , who have never met you or have a clue about your job performance saying yes or no. no one ever knows what works or doesnt when it comes to becoming a SFC or higher.

Go to Iraq, learn the job of your supervisor and then extend your tour so you are there after he leaves. Always worked for me.
