I am getting married in Las Vegas in May, and we are having a party in Illinois when we return for those that cannot go to Vegas. Do I have to serve alcohol, or is soda, tea, milk, and coffee OK? Also, do I have to serve dessert, or can I give each person some German chocolates after dinner?

I would say not necessary on the alcohol, if your parties for your families are usually dry (if not then you should at least have a few bottles of wine and some champagne or Asti for a toast) But yes you should have some sort of dessert like Wedding Cake(!) You dont have to go all out and get a three hundred dollar cake, alot of grocery store bakeries can do a two tier cake for pretty cheap nowadays. But yes you should have a dessert and I would agree that your chocolates would be your favor.

Good luck!

So the "party in Illinois" is just a ploy to receive presents then? If you are only planning a few cheap drinks and nothing else, it certainly doesn't seem like a party, but yet another way to get gifts. Suck it up and serve some cake or cupcakes or something. Oh and the the chocolates would be considered a favor not a dessert.

People expect cake at a wedding. But why be like everyone else. And after a dinner, most of the cake will go to waste.
I think you have a great ides.

As far as the alcohol.....I think again it's an unnecessary expense as long as you have the other stuff you mentioned.

You can serve a "champagne toast"...with cheap champagne...Korbel or something...Thats all I'm going to do.

And I told people they could bring a bottle of wine if they wanted. Other then that im serving tea, soda, water, lemonaid.

Cake if you want...CAKES ARE EXPENSIVE! Shesh! I'm getting married in 2 weeks and still havent ordered my cake...Im ordering it tomorrow for the super walmart...cheapest place I could find. A three tier starting at $134.

Maybe a cheesecake for you? MMMM!!! Usually people like coffee with their dessert.

Or Chocolate covered strawberries.

Wedding cake is a typical dessert.

Alcohol is your choice, but many places will offer a cash bar if expenses are a concern.

You really should have a cake of some sort, even if it comes from the grocery store. I would also serve some wine (not nessisarily expensive wine, but something that's nice that tastes good).

I would serve wine and soda. Also dessert would be very nice with coffee and tea.

Really, it is your choice.
I know many people who don't serve alcohol, but I do believe that most serve a cake.

you do not have to have any booze at the reception/party, but a cake would be nice.... it does not have to be a "wedding cake" just a nicely decorated sheet cake
