Why do we fall for those we do?

I fell for my oldest friend who Im close with, and it feels right but at the same time, I can't help but think it'll never be cause he may only see me as a sister but idk, why does this happen so friggin often?

I mean some of the situations that happened between us was like stupid movie scene. But idk what he thinks and when I asked him to prom all I got was "I can't say yes to that just yet"

But he gives me hugs constantly and I give him hugs too when I get a chance to surprise him and he's always grinning around me, and teases me, sometimes he steals my drinks when I'm hanging out with him.

But why?

i am sorta in the same situation, i have this thing for my best friend who happens to be a guy. it took me like five years to admit it to someone and now that i feel this way, it's as if he can see it, and now, we almost never speak to eachother. he's got his own thing going on and i am completely devastated that things have changed so much. he means so much to me, as a friend, that i would never even consider telling him because i know it would ruin the bond we have and make things even worse--plus, there's the big chance that he doesn't feel the same way and that would kill me. he's the most perfect guy in world for me, and we get along so well, but i'm his little sister... and i can't change that any more than you can. all you can do is live your life and date other guys and hope that one day, you'll find one just like him or that one day he will open his eyes and see what's right in front of him. i feel for you, i really do and i hope it all works out for you.

From what I'm getting, he likes you. He's afraid of things getting awkward which is probably why he hasn't said yes to prom yet.
