Well, many orginizations keep statistics on fires. I would assume you are interested in knowing about fire statistics on smoking related home fires and deaths.

In the United States smoking only comprises about 7% of all home fires, but it is the LEADER in fire releated deaths in the home at 29%.

NFPA usually keeps pretty good statistics, although it looks like they haven't updated their chart since 2002. But here's the link...

http://www.nfpa.org/itemDetail.asp?categoryID=952&itemID=23186&URL=Research%20&%20Reports/Fire%20statistics/Major%20causes%20of%20fire

I hope that was what you were looking for.

Mr Zorvok must think that all dropped cigarettes fall only onto carpets and hard surfaces! Try the fact that they fall into beds, clothing, couches and smolder for hours. For the latest stats go to NFPA and USFA websites for the alarming rate of fires caused by smoking. How do I know, i am a Fire Chief and have to respond to them!

Whenever there is one you can be sure to know about it, it will be on every news channel thousands of times over. To test the likelihood of it take a small sample sized slab of carpet, set it on dirt and put a lit cigarette on it, see what happens usually no more than a slight black burn mark would occur. Maybe thats because cigs burn at a lower temperature and the lack of an actual flame.
