Well it's a strange thing with humans. In an 8 hour night of sleeping, your average human is still going to burn some 500-600 calories. While carbohydrates, even complex (as in apples and whole grains) will all eventually turn to sugar, and then eventually to fat if not burned, I wouldn't necessarily say that you don't need them before bed as well.

I wouldn't eat within a few hours of sleeping, because otherwise not only are the carbs wasted, but since they are wasted can lead to weight gain. But I wouldn't cut them out either if you are going to eat anyways. The body is designed to get energy from carbohydrates and to get various other things from, without being detailed off subject, various other things.

So is it wasted? Not any more than anything else. Eating a steak right before bed would be completely extrenuous as well, but cutting them out all evening is no good, because we're burning calories no matter what we're doing. The only thing in question is the amount burned.

It doesn't much matter what time of day you eat any type of food. It's the total amount of energy intake compared to energy burned in any given period. Although you should try to avoid any food that provide calories to burn but provide little or no nutritional value, like sugar, eg. There are also good and bad carbs. I suggest you get a food guide from the department of health and study it.
