Humility, generosity, an attitude of gratitude, and the ability to maintain a sense of humor. Parenting is impossible without these things. The love is not a quality one can possess, but a magical transformation that occurs naturally.

They should be fully able to support the baby both financially (with or without assistance) and emotionally. In a perfect world, all parents would love their babies, have plenty of patience, and be intelligent enough to know the difference between right and wrong and intelligent enough to know how to raise a child in the best way possible. They would also put their kids first in every situation. Healthy parents is also a plus. Unfortunately, we do not live in a perfect world. Every day, theres people out there who hit and abuse their kids and people who put their babies in the arms of a stranger so they can go get drunk or high. Sad, but true.

There is a poem by Philip Larkin that goes like this:

They f#ck you up, your mum and dad.
They may not mean to, but they do.
They fill you with the faults they had
And add some extra, just for you.

But they were f#cked up in their turn
By fools in old-style hats and coats,
Who half the time were soppy-stern
And half at one another's throats.

Man hands on misery to man.
It deepens like a coastal shelf.
Get out as early as you can,
And don't have any kids yourself.

Sounds awful but it's pretty true. Just try not to pass your bad habits on and you'll be doing a good job, for sure.

Parenting is such a full time job and a huge responsibility. I want to give my son all the guidance he needs to make more of himself than I have of myself. That goes for parental love, education, social skills, sporting prowess and trying my hardest to bring out the best in him.

Hard work but SO rewarding

Those qualities are very important but something that not all but lots of parents miss nowadays is that they need to be LEADERS and TEACHERS...too many parents want to be "best friends" with their kids and they forget that it is their job to raise their child with morals and follow through with discipline (whether it be grounding or whatever). Letting your kids rule the roost is the easy and cowardly way out...

Patience, responsibility, unselfishness, understanding, good morals, and the ability to admit they've made mistakes!
