To hire mercenary groups to go and make our mark on the middle east? I mean, a contract for the French Foreign Legion would be a fraction of the cost of what we are paying US Soldiers. Sure, the death toll would be 10000x's greater, but they would save so much money, right?

To answerer Chris - You obviously don't have any clue of what the FFL is or is capable of. Do some homework.

Yes, it would be. Unfortunately we have to deal with real human beings with values, who want to do what's right but can't always agree on what is right, simply because we have free speech and freedom of religion (and other freedoms) and haven't tried to destroy their particular ideology (but instead allow even anti-American ideologies to be shared in peace).
I suggest a better alternative. Next time we are attacked by a nation that doesn't want to help resolve the issue peacefully, we warn them to empty three of their cities within three weeks. We then bomb one of the cities to the ground (the only dead are those who refuse to move and thus choose to die). We tell them that the next time they attack us, or shelter those who attack us, we will bomb two of six cities to the ground unless they make complete financial payback for their attack on us.
No nation building, no constant attacks by socialists and those who hate the U.S.A. as a hobby or profession, no complaints about killing civilians (if they are stupid and stay where the bombs are coming after carpet blanketing the place with fliers in their own languages, I don't think anyone can complain.).
Finally, whatever they want, we absolutely refuse and do everything to block them due to the attack from that point forward, period. If they can't try legitimate methods to get what they want (like Saudi Arabia and other nations have used to transform nation after nation in South-East Asia into Islamic nations), then they should be stopped for attacking our people.
No one would be able to say we are occupying their nation, or anything of the sort.
Oh, and cut all aid to any nation that supports them.
Is that better?

The cheapest solution would be to take our troops home and then launch the nuclear weapons that we are trying to dismantle, turning the middle-east into one big glass parking lot. We already have the weapons. They have already been paid for. In fact it would save the cost of dismantling and disposing of them.
So... obviously we are not interested the most "cost effective" solution.

You're missing the point. They aren't worried about the government's money at all. So they are more than happy to spend and keep spending our already defecit. If you asked any one of our politicians to personally supply a small army I'm sure they would opt for the much cheaper version of our boys. Think about it. They aren't spending their money. They are spending ours. They don't care about spending other peoples' money.

thats why french have it, but US promotes human rights.
i think that is a great idea, to have segregated foreign legion in US military, and to give english class and american citizenship after 5years of service (if they survives).
they can only pay half amount and send them to iraq.
not to forget US have foreign legion, its just in normal units, they are not segrigated

yeah it would be cheaper but you can't hire someone to do work that they arent willing to do. if the french wanted to fight the would be doing it already. the french foreign legion is not nearly as capable of doing what our soldiers are.
