my 2000 dodge intrepid had a problem with the oil light coming on well the day i took it to the mechanic it broke down they told me the oil pump was going out and i didnt have the cash to fix it so i left. The car sounded like a bunch of pots and pans were clanking under the hood and the car shut itself off and it restarted just long enough to move it from the road then it would crank but only go in reverse....it it repairable or is it shot?

I trying to be helpful... Your cars motor is shot.I buy and sell cars sometimes and I can tell you an intrepid is crap, I passed up more than one with blown motors some for as little as 800.00 and these were nice looking cars. I like finding nice cars with blown motors, heads, slipped timing belt, etc. Every salvage yard wants a arm and a leg for the 2000 and up intrepid. Example; I bought a 2000 Chevy Malibu, typical crap car, it looked nice tough. The motor at the salvage yards I deal with sell them at 500.00 to 800.00 dollars. I was going to buy a sweet intrepid and couldn't find a motor for less than 2,500.00 I asked them why and they said people buy them for that all day. The oil pumps go out and the timing belts are suppose to be serviced something stupid like every 30,000 miles. 2k for a motor is robbery. If you still owe money on the car, I'm sorry. The mechanic will probably change the oil pump for you because mechanic's can be vampires. Your motor is toast. If it's paid off cut your losses and sell it with a bad motor and buy a new car. I know this sucks. Don't let this discourage you from buying American.

I never heard a car do that just from an oil pump. My dad is a mechanic, and I know that the engine needs oil. It sounds like you now have engine trouble. In the future , let your car sit until you have the cash to get it fixed. I have found that when I have car trouble and I decide to drive it always cost me more when I continue to drive. I would get my car fixed, it is repairable.

If the oil pump is gone out there will be a Lot of noises that may cause you to think the engine is falling apart, and which it will if you continue to drive it without oil flowing to cool and lubricate it. It is expensive ! May pay to get another car because you probably have damaged other major parts.

will any thing is fixable but that do's not sound good it sound like you are going to spend some money on it or you are going to have to get a norther car a oil pump is a critical part of the motor if it not pumping oil to all the engine components your motor is not going to last very long as you have found out.
