I was recently in NYC on vacation and made a purchase with my Discover card, which caused their fraud department to panic and shut down my card until I could call and verify the charges. They called my home phone and left a message. Unfortuntately, I made the mistake of leaving all of my other cards in my hotel room, and had to abandon my plans for the day to go back to my hotel and call for their "permission" to use my card again.

They've done this on several occassions, and it's getting to the point where I can't depend on the card to remain active when I'm making larger purchases. I spend about 2k per month on the card, and always pay the card in full each month. This purchase was for about $4k, and my credit limit is about $25k.

I've asked them to stop this tactic, but they''ve basically told me it's their money, and they can do what they want. Besides using a new card for all of my purchases, is there anything I can do? Are there any "trustworthy" cards out there?

Fire them! Use one of your other cards.

I have used my Amex Green card for years and NEVER got declined EVER.
I started using my Visa with BofA that I've had since 2003 (not a new card) and they have twice shut down my card in two weeks. Last time it was at the grocery store with a basket full of groceries. T'was really embarrasing, and everyone in line was looking at me like a deadbeat.
So I paid with my Visa debit card and as I was walking out to the truck, I get a call from BofA fraud dept. I kindly told them that I won't be using the card anymore because I can't rely on it.
Back to Amex I go.

I used to have the same problem with Discover. Any time I bought something other then like maybe $50 worth of groceries, they were calling to see if it was really me buying that stuff from Amazon. Drove me nuts. And heaven forbid I should go on vacation and charge something in a city other than my home town. It was like they thought I was going to sit at home all the time and only buy things in one town.

I finally gave up and got a Visa and I just use that now. I never did figure out how to get Discover to just let me buy stuff.

well u must give them credit for actuall "caring' about your credit card for fraud charges...its stupid they dont let u know ahead of time to suspend your card..but i think it is strictly discover..i have heard nothign but bad thibngs from them..and i refuse to own a card from them..a friend of mine decided to pay $1000 towards his bill and deducted $2000 instead and they refused to give it back beacuse it already went thru.
