Poliomyelitis, often called polio or infantile paralysis, is an acute viral infectious disease which is spread from person-to-person via the fecal-oral route.[1] The majority of polio infections are asymptomatic. In about 1% of cases the virus enters the central nervous system (CNS) via the blood stream. Within the CNS, poliovirus preferentially infects and destroys motor neurons. The destruction of motor neurons causes muscle weakness and flaccid paralysis.

I don't know the exact breakdown of the muscles but polio destroys the muscle til you just die. If you catch it in time before it destroys your stomach and heart then you will just loose the effected areas of muscle. I know personally several people who have had polio and recovered but are crippled from it.. I also have a cousin who got polio from the live vaccine and her parents and Dr's didn't catch it. I don't know why. That poor baby 2 yrs old suffered as she withered away and finally died.
