It's be about a month or so before they hatch. Since she laid an egg this mroning, she'll probly have 3-7 eggs, then sit on them for about 2 to 3 weeks. I've only bred my birds once, and they were budgies. She liad 6 eggs, witch was a period of around 10 days to lay them all, then 17 days for the first one to hatch. She ate one of the eggs, one didn't hatch, and four survived, all livving to this day. Also, It isn't very smart to handle the eggs, but the part about if you touch a baby, the parents will smell human on it, and not care for it, is an old wives tale, most birds cannot smell, but more like "smell danger"... Now, you might have a hurt finger from the female, due to her protectiveness...

It takes about 14 days for the eggs to hatch from the time the hen starts sitting. She will probably lay about 4 eggs. When I was breeding canaries I would remove the eggs from the nest as they were laid and replace them with a fake egg until the last egg was laid. (the last egg is usually darker and has more speckles) After the last egg I would put them back in the nest. This way all of the eggs would hatch the same day. Baby canaries can double in size the first day. If they hatch on different days the larger chick will get most of the food and the younger ones can die. You can keep the eggs in a cup of seed to cushion them, if you decide to do this. Pet stores sell fake eggs to use as a replacement.

I had a pair of white pigeons and the male got out and the next day she had an egg and another egg the next day, the male hasn't come back but the good news is she sat on the eggs for 18 days and they both hatched 5 days ago, there doing great, ill hand feed soon, that's pretty rare that the eggs hatch with only one parent, Pretty cool
