I'm so scared to drool at the dentist and to even admit when I'm in pain. I dont want them to think I'm a baby what can I do? I also dont wnat a mouth prop because I'm afraid it's going to make me drool a little and I'm scared to have a panic attack.

Anyone know some dentists that treat in dealing with fearful patients and what is the whole thing about behavior management treatment during dental treatment. What is going to happen? I want to be awake I'm so afraid to be asleep.

Give me so good advice that will help me please. What do you think a dentist will think if you cry while there? How can I relax and stay relax while recieving treatment. Will they allow me to recieve treatment with out any medication?

Please answer all the questions I have it will really help me out.

You need to tell them right up front that you're very nervous about the whole thing. They will tell you what they're doing before they do it. Believe me you are NOT the first person to have these concerns with a dentist and they are able to cope with fearful patients. My Mom freaks at the dentist and the assistant will hold her hand while they work and talk to her. Why are you worried about drooling? They will use the suction to keep saliva controlled. That's why it was invented! It's small, it doesn't hurt and it works very well. Take a mild relaxant before you go so you can be as calm as possible. Calms Forte (available at health food stores) is a wonderful product to calm you down and it's non-narcotic and works quickly. Just take one or two before you go and it will relax you so you can deal with it. Believe me dentists have seen nervous, crying, even hysterical patients so don't build it up in your head. It will NOT be as bad as you are afraid it will be. Take a deep slow breath and R E L A X . . . .

and do it again before you go!

First two years of dental school is mainly basic science courses (gross anatomy, histology, biochemistry, etc.) and technique courses where you learn dental techniques by practicing on a dummy head with a jaw model and plastic teeth. Third and fourth years you treat real patients in the school's dental clinics (including your classmates if they want to have some dental work done and trust you to do it). You will also be on rotation to various hospitals outside the school. All treatment are under instructor supervision at all times, and as the care provider you are graded for your competancy and how you interact with the patient. Yes, you will see nervous patients who have fears and learn how to treat them-- Dental schools recognize that a lot of people are fearful, which is why teaching students how to deal with such situations has become an important part of the curriculum over the past few decades. Hope this helps.

dude chill out! a doctor is not going to think your a retard for being scared its the dentist for crying out loud. YOUR paying THEM, so they are going to do anything to make you comfortable. and you dont have to go to sleep, you can jsut get shots to numb your mouth. and um do NOT WORRY ABOUT DROOLING! its so totally natural, everyone drools, if u didnt you wouldnt be human! what they do when you drool is just take that like sucky thing and it cleans the drool (ya know one of those little hose things that they also use to spray water in your mouth) they have them on hand just for drool! im serious!

learn to practice relaxation with a self-hypnosis
CD or a relaxing yoga CD or breathing CD.
then practice that technique while at the dentist.
