The National Kitchen and Bath Association(NKBA), recommends that you have a 36" clearance in traffic areas and 42" clearance in the work area of your kitchen.

36" for one person to walk around. 48" for 2. 42" is nice for a normal kitchen.

that depends on how big your appliences are or how many cabinets/storage you plan to put in the kitchen, but plan to leave at least 3 ft around all sides for workspace and room to get around. are you planning to eat at the island or use for something else?
