Removing wallpaper from 130 year old plaster walls?

I am buying a very old house. The house is 130 years old. The walls are plaster. Over some of the walls is some very ugly wall paper from the 50'-50's. Id there a website that I can learn the do's and don't's of removing wall paper from very old plaster? Or if anyone already knows, could you please fill me in? Thanks.

a 1 gallon lawn sprayer and some DIF. You can get it at any Home Improvement store. I use a 4" scraper (razor blade) mix the DIF with hot water, pump the sprayer, spray it on the wall, wait a few minutes spray it again and it usually comes right off with little effort. If the wallpaper has a vinyl coating or paint on it you'll have to get what is called a paper tiger, it's scratches the wallpaper and allows the dif to penetrate better. You can also use a utility knife if you're careful.

Give the DIF some time to work and make sure you don't get the pre-mixed stuff. A gallon costs about $15. I've done this many times to my houses and it works great the only real problem you run into is the possiblity of the plaster being loose but that's a whole new set of problems in itself.

Use a wallpaper tool and plain old fabric softener in a spray bottle. Let it soak in thoroughly, scrape with a stiff putty knife slowly because the plaster is old and cracked and will fall off easily. If this starts to happen, you might as well figure on a bigger job than you expected. Rip it all out and put up drywall

first off, congrats on the new home and have fun with the remodeling!! To get old wall paper to peel off easily, spray equal parts white vinegar and water on it til it is saturated and wait a few minutes.then zip the stuff off with a wallpaper scraper. If it is stubborn, try carefully scoring the wall paper with the scraper befor you spray. Good luck!
