Military Ball, whether it be Navy, Air Force, Army or Marine, is a formal military function. Therefore the proper dress should be Dinner Dress formal uniform. Because such uniform is not standard issue for enlisted, the alternate is Full Dress Uniform with medals and ribbons. Medals should be worn on the left side, and ribbons without corresponding medal should be worn on the right side in reverse order. White gloves would also be appropriate. Being in a huff because your command requires you to wear formal uniform is just the wrong attitude for these kind of events. Be proud of your uniform and wear it with pride. The smart thing to do is to get the Dinner Dress uniform, the female version is generally formal skirt or gown. I'm sure in the Army and Air Force uniform regs you would be able to find examples of Formal Dinner dress uniforms for both men and women. The links below are examples of U.S. Navy Formal dress uniforms

I am upset about my military ball. They are making me wear my uniform. They are going off about how formal they want this to be, that big wigs from DC are going to be there, and they want all the females to wear a mans uniform. I was going to take my boyfriend and we were going to make a romantic night out of it, but now I'm just going to go, take some pictures (as that is my job in the Army) and leave when I'm done. They took all the fun out of it.
I guess I shouldn't have hoped that the military could replace my missed prom experience. Sadness.
You will probably have to wear your Class A's too.

Proper mess dress would be a start. Did you say you're in the air force or just watched a lot of TV?

Mess dress would be the UoD with all medals and ribbons awarded. You can wear mini-medals/ribbons.
