A friend of mine is about 5'2 and she was normally 103lbs which is average and healthy weight for her. Her weight went up to 120 and she freaked. I noticed how she would talk about it all the time and then afterwards she just seemed to be eating less and when she did eat, she'd make trips to the bathroom and then buy mints or gum. She never said anything but she's down to 83lbs now. She's kept this a steady weight for a while now, no higher, no less really. I looked up the average weight for 15 year old girls who are 5'2' and it said a helathy weight is 89lbs -131lbs. She's not much below that but she still looks kind of sickly. I mean, she looks good but very tiny. I'm worried about her and her eating habbits and how they're effecting her. She lost all that weight in about a month and a half. How much weight can someone lose by becoming anorexic/bullemic in a week period? She isn't doing this in a healthy way, and I'm worried. Any advice is greatly appreiated.

It sounds to me like she has a serious problem. I'm not sure what chart you were looking at, but 89lbs is VERY small. I've never seen that as a healthy weight. Dropping that much weight that fast is also another indication that she has an eating disorder. It's not natural or healthy.

You have to understand that in your friend's mind, she sees herself as fat/big. Encourage her to see a doctor to get this under control. However, to overcome this, she needs to want to help herself.

Continue to encourage her, talk to her parents, do whatever you can to help her want to help herself. Even if she is angry with you, continue. In the end, she will realize that you were trying to help. This isn't something to be shrugged off. She could potentially cause serious damage to her body, if not die. I know it sounds dramatic, but it is something very serious.

I don't know the answer to your question about how much weight someone can lose in a week, but I did want to say that I am 5'1" and weigh about 100 pounds. I am pretty sure that 83 or 89 pounds is not a healthy weight. I am quite small, so that weight seems incredibly thin. People make fun of me at my size, I can only imagine what hurtful things people may say about her. Anorexia and/or bulimia indicate that there is something wrong inside that your friend needs to work out. Could you try to help her feel better about herself? Her natural weight of 103 pounds is probably a healthy and attractive weight on her. What is really going on with this girl?

Your friend is currently very underweight i must say. My advice would be to talk to her .. she's your friend. Try to make her understand that you just want her to be healthy. This is a very dangerous situation. Going to a doctor or someone else right away isn't the best answer. She needs someone to talk to, Anorexia is a very emotional problem, it isn't all about weight. She may be under extreme stress and she needs to talk to someone who she is very close to. Make her feel a bit more confident, whether she rejects it or not, tell her she is beautiful no matter what, she shouldn't have to "measure up" to what all the media puts out. Talk to her about what's bothering her latley, try to help her with those problems. The emotional stress from this disorder is worse then the disorder itself. Talk to her about happy things, take her to places where she feels a lot confident and comfortable.

..And your question about "How much weight can someone lose by becoming anorexic/bulimic in a week period?" .. that depends on the persons body, really. If she fasts (starves just living on juices or water) for a weeks period of time .. it can be possible to lose 1 to 2lbs a day.

Try to explain to her the dangerous effects of what an eating disorder can do. Anorexia could eventually lead to heart failure, due to the person not eating and giving the heart the nutrients it needs. Also in a bulimics point of view .. do you remember Terri Schiavo? -- She had a massive amount of brain damage, and doctors say that it may have formed because of the rediculous amounts of purging she once did due to being Bulimic. As you can see, an eating disorder is VERY life-threatening.

In my opinion, the ultimate cure for an ED is just to have someone that's there for them. If she refuses to listen, and eat heathier, then I would advise you to seek deeper help. Go to a loved one of hers, that would understand (and won't automatically flip out on her), maybe they would be able to talk some sense into her. Other then that, talk to her parental guardians ..and make them see that this condition is bad, and they should take her to a doctor right away.

I really hope it works out for your friend, I know it's very painful to see someone you care for go through this type of situation.

And also, I'm sorry I wrote a whole book lol, there's just a lot to explain and I hope you understand.

Talk to her parents. I know that you don't want to because you are her friends with her. But you have to help her. Tell a guidance counselor at school. If this continues and her parents don't do something and she doesn't get better, she could die. Ask someone who does care to contact social services. People do die.
