I was in the Navy back in the 70's and graduated from boot camp at Great Lakes . Just remember that your there to build up your physical abilities and learn to work as a team . They will keep you very busy most of the time and it will be tough . Once your out of boot camp though you have more time for yourself and generally it's a more relaxed atmosphere . So keep that in mind when your in boot camp and things get tough . You will receive water survival training , much classroom instruction as well as marching and physical drill till the company you are assigned to works as one . You will go through an indoctrination period where you will be fitted for new clothes and they will take you to a store on base to purchase personal Items also . Everything you take with you will be shipped home . At graduation families are invited to see the graduation if they can travel to the base . Most will get time off for a visit home before going to their next duty station or school for more training and then join the fleet . Good luck and thank you for joining you can be very proud of yourself !

This will be an adventure for you.
1. You'll learn the defintion of hurry up and wait.
2. There are 3 ways of doing something, the right way, the wrong way,he navy way,
3. If you're into astronomy, there's nothing like getting up at 5AM to watch the sun rise.
4. You'll find excitement in the fine dining.
Nothing like SOS at 6 AM, and you'll wonder when they'll screw up Cheerios and Milk.
5. If it moves, salute it, if it doesn't , paint it.
6. You will see the initials, "FTN" almost everywhere. Before long you'll know what it means. HINT: In the Army, it's FTA!
7. Your vocabulary will expand consideably. Just don't use the new words you learned in front of your mother.
You'll soon feel it sucks, but when it is over, it will have been one of the most rewarding periods of your life, and you will probably never forget most of those who went through it with you.
Remember, millions passed there before you and got through. So will you.
Good luck. You're joining a very special club.

I your DEP book there is alist of stuff you can bring to boot camp. I got everything I thought I might need on the list and it all got shipped back. Bring nothing except a change of clothes if you'll be staying over night somwhere on your way to Great Lakes, a toothbrush, and religious text (Bible, Koran, Torah, etc.)
Do everything in your power to get an advanced paygrade. Try to get others to join, complete the DEP requirments. By the time you get on the plane to go to boot you should know your Sailors Creed, 11 General Orders, Rate/Rank recognition,, and you should be able to do twice the required number of pushups and situps and be able to complete the mile and half run in the alotted time with a minute to spare. When you get to Great Lakes at the first opportunity go to your RDC and tell them you would like to be on division staff and no matter what job they give you do it to the fullest of your abilities. The military gives so many oppportunities to make an advanced paygrade these days that if you graduate boot as an E-1 there is something worng with you.

As someone else pointed out... confirm with the recruiter what you CAN keep during training at Great Lakes !! The Navy ships your civies and any "contra-band" home.
I can't tell you anything specific about Great Mistakes, as I went thru NTC Orlando way back in 1985.
Just be prepared for some LONG days, a total loss of privacy and your individuality (for the length of basic), and a change in your lifestyle.
It may seem to suck while you're going THRU it... but later you'll look back with amusement, perhaps fondness, and pride.
Oh, and be PROUD you're in the NAVY Shipmate !! Good luck.

Welcome aboard shipmate.
Everything will be taken care of once you get there. Like it was stated above just bring the clothes on your back and any prescription medicine you are taking.
That and a good attitude towards your new self. You are who you want to be once you step on the plane to fly to Great Lakes.
The P (processing) days in boot camp they'll issue you all your uniforms, update you on your shots, get you the toiletries you need etc. They're probably the worst days of it though.
Good luck:)
If you have any specific questions feel free to IM me.

You can practice showering with 80 of your closest girlfriends so it won't be a shock when you get to boot camp. Remember, in and out in 2 minutes or less.
Best of luck.

Don't get married. You are going to cheat on your husband while you're at sea. You're very likely to get knocked-up, while you're out there, too.
