You have a few options when transitioning from relaxed to natural without cutting your hair off all at once. Trim your hair little by little, and you'll be all natural in no time.
- Make the straight hair curlier.
You can try a wet set with rollers, or braid your hair while damp and let it out in the morning. This will help disguise the two different textures.
- Make the curly/kinky hair straighter.
Some people choose to press or flat iron their natural hair as it grows in to mask the different textures. The drawback to this is that you could be damaging your precious new growth with the heat.
- Wear braids.
You can wear braids through your entire transitioning process, for as long as you choose. Make sure to deep condition and trim your hair between each set of braids, and don't wear one set for too long. Also, be sure to use a reputable braider. If your scalp feels super tight or you get little white bumps around your hairline, go somewhere else! (This can lead to hair loss from the tension/pulling).
No matter what you do, keep your hair super moist and deep conditioned at all times. Combing and brushing should be minimal, as the point where your natural hair meets the straight hair is very delicate.
If your hair is long, a simple bun may work as a transition style. Just tie down the front with a scarf to help the roots "lay down" and you're good to go.
Hope this helps, Kaya
