Until I left home, depending on who went to bed first, I'd pop into my parents' room before bed, or they'd pop into mine, just to say good night and I love you. It served a number of good purposes: We always said I love you at least once a day, even if we'd had an argument; my parents knew when I was going to bed (or had an excuse to check that I was still there); and, like with you and your kids, it gave us a chance to talk if we needed to.
I'm in my 30s, and we still do the same thing every time I go home for a visit. It's very sweet.
Edit: Oh! I forgot! We always gave goodnight kisses, too ... You can imagine what that meant in high school. My parents were very, very clever, and I love them for it.

It is more normal to continue tucking your children in at night than not to. Do you not do the same to your partner before you fall asleep?... maybe in a different way but, its a human act of love that should be maintained regardless... especially, when the days are filled up with many other distractions. There should always be some form of tucking in... even if it is only a "goodnight" and, "I love you" etc. Agreed... the family bond is primary and there are no "guidelines" adequate enough to govern this.

My daughter is only three so obviously I'm still very involved her her bedtime routine. First I tae her to brush her teeth, etc. in the bathroom. Then put on pajamas if she doesn't already have them on. Then she gets in bed and I read her 3-4 books. Then we sing a few songs. Then she wants to be rocked and bundled up in her favorite blanket. Then we say our prayers, say goodnight, ans it's lights out. It takes a while but it gets her wound down and ready for sleep. I'm sure eventually she'll prefer to read to herself so it'll change a bit.

Gosh, I have four kids at home and I try to tuck them in every night. My oldest who is 18 may not get tucked in, but I open her door before I go to bed and wish her a good night and tell her I love her. I don't think any child is too old!

Mine is 7 1/2, and thinks I'm mad at her and cries if I don't tuck her in. It's not even tucking in really, just that last short conversation (like you described), going over the next day, turning on the nightlight, etc.
I just asked her right now - she says she'll never want me to stop. :)

My mom died when I was 17 but I always remember her coming in to say goonight. Some of my favorite memories of her are our talks before bedtime. I remember my brother knocking on the wall between our rooms bugging her to hurry up and come to his room to talk. When we were little we probably used it as a bit of a stalling technique, but I tell you--she got some of the best info from us at that time! Things we wouldn't open up about right after we came home from school......we'd be spilling our guts just in order to "chat" and stay up a bit longer.

children are worth the 2 minutes of effort it takes to say good night.
in high school i would always come and say good night and give my parents a kiss and hug. i knew that before long my grandmother would come back and peak in to make sure that i was settled in bed and say another good night.
it is so important. SD

I am almost 14 and my mom still tucks me in at night. Even though I am a teenager it makes me feel good because it makes me remember that she loves me.

My son is 15, I usually just push open his door and say night night butt head, he laughs and says night momma. I say i love you as I start to close the door and he said I know mom me too.
My daughter is 6, and I kiss her and cover her and she says good night and within an hour she has her pillow in her hand and says Mommy can i sleep in here ( my room) lol
