If you consider your body, they say that the cell is the smallest unit of consciousness. Billions of micro conscious unit collect to make one conscious human. Supposedly, when there are millions of conscious humans together the consciousness collects on a gargantuan level. And if (let say) one third of the world worried about a major earthquake in Japan, then supposedly Japan would have one as a direct result.

If you asked everyones opinion within a specific social group on, say, brown onions, then after adding all the opinions together and dividing by the number of participants, there would be an average opinion on brown onions held by that particular social group and this means that their collective consciousness is that way inclined towards brown onions.
