You will need to find an experienced piercer that has pictures of surface piercings that they have done, and pictures of the surface piercings that have actually healed. Surface piercings have a high rejection rate, especially in areas where there is alot of wear on the skin (hip bones are one of these places, because of pants). I would suggest finding a piercer here : http://www.safepiercing.org

The APP accredited piercers are usually pretty good at surface piercings. If you are in the Chicago area, I could recommend some piercers to you, if you need.

The best way to heal any piercing is to be religious about your aftercare, and do your sea salt soaks, and LISTEN to what your piercer says. Other then that, my surface piercing was the EASIEST piercing I have ever healed....

it takes quite a long time to heal, however most do not heal. Surface bars [anywhere on the body] have a very high rejection rate due to them being so close to the surface, the body quickly tries to push them out [causing migration/rejection]. they do hurt quite a bit, but are worth it and BEAUTIFUL if you are actually able to keep yours.
