I am having my wedding and reception at an American Legion. I was wondering what ways I can make them both beautiful and each stand out instead of feeling like I was cheap. We have two kids together and we just decided to get married. So any advice would be wonderful.

One thing that made things work at my reception was making it child-friendly. So many of these celebrations are ruined because the kids are bored silly so they drive the adults crazy.
There was a small room where we hooked up some video games for the older kids and there was a corner in the main event room that we sectioned off with benches. Inside, we loaded the section with toys for the very little ones.
There was also a selection of food that both adults and kids enjoyed. There was constant music playing in the background. Some of the selected songs were for the kids.
I know your question was about beautifying the room, but the reception will be more remembered if even the pint-sized guests have a good time.

Rent stuff like an arch with ivy, tablecloths, and candlebra's. It's not that expensive and looks very elegant. Candlelight makes it look even nicer!! And yes use lots of christmas lights to line head table and edges of room. We did the same thing and brought it together with handmade centerpieces matching colors we chose. (they were sprinkles of potpourri from a dollar store and little swans from a craft place - easy!) We had the tables seperated to have an aisle to walk down and then we didn't have to move tables either, saves lots of time! Then we kept the tables apart to have a dance in the middle and the headtable was the centerpiece at the back of the hall. Used the arch to walk through for ceremony and then as a backdrop behind head table afterwards!! Got great comments so good luck!

Good for you. I like the suggestions above. Also put mirrors on the tables under vases holding flowering or bare branches. It looks very dramatic. Go with black and white decor. Craft stores have wonderful ideas for decorations.

I would make sure the lights are dimmed or turned off completely. Often times establishments such as these use those big florescent lights. I would suggest lighting the place with lots of candles or white christmas lights.
