you burn so many calories per day just doing nothing that is called your resting metabolic rate, you burn 14 calories per day for every lb of muscle and 3 for every lb of fat, so most adults burn an average of 1400 or more calories per day. if you would like me to figure yours email me your height and weight and i will do that for you.

Your confusion is certainly understandable! However, you should not be burning more calories than you eat unless you are attempting to lose weight. The 1500-1800 figure you quote is the number of calories most people's metabolism burns by performing life-sustaining functions such as keeping your heart pumping.

1200 calories a day is, for most weights, almost a starvation diet. Unless you are a child or severely overweight no doctor would reccomend such a diet.

Hope this helped!

Your body naturally burns calories every day (basal metabolic rate). When you exercise you burn even more (approx. 100 calories for each mile that you run or walk). Most people's BMR is around 1600-2200 calories per day. If you want to lose weight, you'll need to eat less than your BMR + exercise. For every 3,500 calories less that you eat, you'll lose 1 pound of fat. To lose 1 pound per week, you'll need to eat 500 less calories a day than you burn. Hope that helps. See the link below for a more detailed explanation.

You have to try and maintain the 1200 calories a day that you need to survive. Any extras need to be burned off.
