the skin on my dogs paw is cracked. Is there something that I can do for her or do I have to take her to the vet? The crack is not severe but it does bother my dog. Is there any creams that I can use like Polysporin or vit E oil?

"Bag Balm" is a salve that you can purchase at pet supply stores and drug stores. It will help heal the cracks and it will provide further protection.

Cracks on dogs are often a result of too much exposure to hot, dry weather, to wet conditions that soften the outer skin, or to very cold weather.

Cracked pads from hot dry conditions or very cold weather benefit from ointments such as aloe or Vaseline that soften up the hardened areas. First, clean off the pads - to prevent infection and then apply the ointments.

I agree with heather`s answer, be very careful what u apply to ur dog`s paw, consult with ur vet as to the proper ointment or talk with someone knowledgeable at ur local pet store before u apply anything. It`s almost a given that ur dog will lick at it.

There is a product called "Pad Guard" specifically for paws. It's mainly used for hunting dogs (running through thick brush), but I don't see why you couldn't use it on any dog.

My vet recommended Vaseline for 1 of my dogs who occasionally gets this problem. You want to be careful not to use it for too long because you don't want the pads to soften too much either.

I would take her to the vet just to be sure. Just to make sure it is not a serious cut and to make sure it does not get infected and also to get it healed. Possibly find out what it is from so you can avoid it in the future.

you could use one that isn't toxic if your dog licks it off. i would read labels before using it, you could end up with a poisoning instead of cracked skin. good luck!!
