if i need the 1040ez for federal what form do i need to file state returns?

It depends on where you live. Many states just have one basic form for filing, then various schedules to attach for special situations. You would probably need only the main form for your state - not very likely you'd need any supporting schedules if your federal filing was on a 1040EZ.

Each state is different but no matter where you are you can pick up what you need at your local post office.

You never mentioned which state. Each state has its own tax system. If it's California it would be 540-2EZ.
