My husband is coming back from Iraq and I would like to buy some champagne. We hardly ever drink champagne so I have no clue what kind to buy. I am looking not to spend more than $50 per bottle. I am going to Whole Foods to purchase it so if anyone has ideas, please tell me!

I am very happy to know that your husband is returning home safely. I salute him for serving this country.

If you want to be picky and get real champagne, make sure that it comes from the Champagne region in France. In some countries, "bubbly" can be called champagne only if it comes from there; otherwise it has to be called "sparkling wine." To welcome 2001, the real beginning of the 21st century, I sought a fancy bottle of champagne, and paid only $40. I can't remember which one it was, though. It was excellent! You don't have to buy Dom Perignon to get a first-class genuine champagne.

There are plenty of sparkling wines, not from Champagne but called that anyway, that are very good. Ask someone in the know at a large liquor store, and he or she can tell you of a good bottle of champagne. Or, maybe somebody at Whole Foods knows of a brand that gives you the most bang for your buck, so to speak.

You will not go wrong if you buy a bottle of Pommery Champagne. It actually comes from Champagne in France. It also comes in a pack of smaller 187.5 mL bottles called Pop. There are 4 bottles in the pack that all together equal the usual 750 mL. The 750 mL bottle goes for about $40. I am not sure if they sell it at Whole Foods but you can definately get it at ABC if there is one by you.

Another good one to try is Schramsberg - it is produced in Napa, California but by the French Method. This is very good champagne. There are many prices depending on the age of the bottle but you can get a pretty good one for about $25.

The better quality the champagne (i.e. the smaller the bubbles), the less of a hangover you are likely to notice the next day. Both of the above mentioned are quality. If they do not carry them at Whole Foods, ask a knowledgable employee about which quality champagne they do carry. Whichever bottle you buy, don't forget the melted chocolate and strawberries.

Cheers and welcome home to your husband.

Whatever you buy just make sure it's REAL Champagne from France. Roderer is good as is Mumm's and Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label. You should be able to get any of these for around $35

you don't need to spend that much money. I don't know what they have at whole foods, but Prosecco, Italian sparkling wine is good ($10-$20) and I have had some decent Spanish Sparkling wines as well.--same price range-- Congratulations! your husband is a hero !

The best (and cheapest) champagne is Tosti Asti. The only way it can get better is mixed with a shot of Creme de Cassis. Bless your husband and tell him thank you and welcome home for me! :)
