Do you mean a psychologist or a psychiatrist? Psychiatrists have to go to medical school because they are able to prescribe medication. Specialization to become a psychiatrist can take about 4 years postgraduate. You can visit the site below to see how long typical medical school programs take, but to my knowledge it's typically about 4 years, followed by 2 years of residency. All programs are different though.

Psychologists cannot prescribe medication and therefore, do not go to medical school. Psy.D. or Ph.D. graduate programs generally run between 4-6 years.

Try not to analyse everything and everyone. Esp. yourself. Never give family your opinion unless asked. You will piss everyone off and wonder why you wanted to become a psych in the first place.
Just my opinion, that is the best advice you could get. The rest is up to you.
