it may be up inside my car. I know I killed it, it couldn't have survived. I sat there stunned for a few minutes, but didn't have the heart or stomach to get out and look. On my way back I searched the side of the road when I drove by and there was no sign of it. Could it be up underneath my car?

It more than likely didn't have a home given the area I was in. No homes. And the area where I live has an infestation of stray cats. I have even taken a few in before and fed them, but the neighbors complained because of all the strays so I stopped doing that. It was just a kitten, laying smack in the middle of the road. By the time I saw it it was too late. I feel sick to my stomach over it. Given the sound (I will probably have nightmares over this) I don't think there's any way it survived. I just can't bring myself to look up under my car.

i understand how you feel. please don't feel to bad.*big hug* you didn't do it on purpose and you are feeling guilty. don't beat yourself up to much.
when cats know they are dying, this is what my family always tell me, they try to go home and die. the poor thing probably got knocked back and is probably hiding in it's own place.
the cat would not be stuck in your car at all.
please feel better. talk to someone live. it helps rather than not being able to speak about it.

Not likely most road killed animals are tossed many many feet away from the scene of the accident if they are not on the side of the road it means you didnt get the cat with your tires. You got it with the front of the car or the axles. This will pick the animal up and throw it. ITs most likely in the ditch several yards away from where you hit it... IF its dead. It could be under the car but most cars have that type of gaurd underneath so the cat would have bounced and flew out from behind the car. I have vast experiance in this field since my previous job had me dealing allmost every single day with road kill or injured pets. My sisters 2 got hit at the same time just recently on a busy highway, one was instantly killed and squashed like a pancake, the other was thrown about 50 feet down a steep embankment landing at a stream bed. He didnt die and I found him about a few hours later, Though we euthinzied him cause he had a broken back, jaw, two broken legs, and a punctured spleen. This is why people if they love there cats, dont let them run around on highways. My sister paid dearly, they were beautiful cats that were just spayed and nuetered 2 weeks before, and she kept saying she just felt they needed to go outside cause they are cats. Bam they are toast now and pushin up the daisies.

That's horrible!!! I hope this is a serious post! you should definitely look for it under your car. You dont want that cat stuck in there! Especially if it is stuck there and it is still alive!!! And that is the case please take to a vet.
The only thing I could think of if you are SURE you hit it and its not on the road or under the car is maybe when you hit it it got thrown off the side of the road? Are there woods near the road or bushes? Try looking near there. You really should. I know it was an accident but most likely this cat had a home. You should investigate and find out. Make another post to update when you find out.

OMG!! I am so sorry. That had to of been horrid!! But you had no way to stop. It either could be up under there, or it may have surived?! Maybe you could get a friend or neighbor to look under there for ya. I know that me and my mom accidentally ran over a big dog, altho it was already dead, we went back to that spot that next day, and we seen the dog. IT WAS HUGE!!! My mom was crying, even tho we didnt kill it, we are big animal lovers, and were very upset about the incident. I hope things will work out ok, like i said, get a friend or neighbor to look under there for ya. GOOD LUCK~~ and im sorry to hear it...

more than likely, it crawled off the road & died somewhere or was picked up by a fox or other scavenger. dead things don't lie long. this is hard. & good of you to care. but such is nature's way. this is natural selection at work. the kitten was not smart enough to avoid roads, it won't grow up breed any more cats with such a dangerous disregard for their environment.
i'm no monstrous cat-hater, i've kept them all my life & this breaks my heart, but such is the way of things. "nature red in tooth & claw"
also, continue to feed the strays. if anyone complains, tell them
1) mind their own damn business
2)would they rather be over-run with rats
3) it says all it needs to about them & their moral character that an act of kindness is seen as a bad thing.
folk like the complainers should be horse-whipped & strung up.

It may be closeby hiding somewhere in horrible pain, animals tend to hide when hurt or dying. The alternative is that someone with more compassion than you found the cat and took care if it, dead or alive. I'm sorry for what you went through, I would feel awful, too, but you failed your responsibilities as a driver and as a humane being when you left that poor animal without checking how it was doing. -c

Get a grip and go look. It's doubtful it's up inside your car. It's more likely that you hit the cat and it was thrown to the side of the road and dragged itself off into cover.
I wish people would keep their cats at home and these things would'nt happen.Mine are'nt allowed out of their own yard.If they so much as get close to the fence I yell at them and they come back in a hurry. If not I send one of the dogs to get the kitty and they run them back onto the porch.Needless to say my dogs love this game. But they don't get to play it much now that the cats are older.

It could be, but probably not. You drove a bit after you hit the cat. What in all likehood happened is the cat crawled off the road and died.

Cat's see evil spirits and could depart a room if one enters. I certainly have encountered a "growl" as quickly as in my existence and presently after that my brakes failed and my truck bumped into anothe motor vehicle. be careful.

that's a horriable experience for you and the cat. I hate it when stupid people alow their cats to be outside unattended this is what happens. hopefully the owners are happy that they have made you have to deal with such a horriable experience. obviously it wasn't a very loved cat or it would have been inside where it would have been safe.
