WWI led to WWII. the Treaty of Versailles signed at the end of WWI basically put German into shambles. They were forced to pay a rediculous amount of money that shattered their economy and lost some of their land. It was because of the German's poor treatment at the end of WWI by the victors that Adolf Hitler was able to rise to power on the platform of righting those wrongs.
WWI also inspired new types of warfare. The trench warfre used in WWI was horrific and practically a whole generation was lost. New technologies and ideas sprung from the horror. Aircraft were used more extensively to go behind the lines, tanks were created to counter the machine guns that would mow down an advance, and the Blitzkrieg (lightning war) style of warfare was created to overthrow a nation before there was a chance to get stuck in the stalemate of a trench war.

The league of nations was formed after WWI which later was the basis for the United Nations. Also the Geneva convention came out of WWI. This set a standard of rules we now use today in warfare and set guidelines for the treatment of POW's. It also was the beginnings of America emerging as a super power.

On the American side, the legacy was elation and optimism. The optimism went through stages and ended with the depression. (The two are actually linked. The elation in the market place led to complete trust in the banking and corporate systems established, and there was no oversight.)
On the German side, you had the famous "November Criminals" and the Weimar Republic. Reparations crippled the German economy and made them bitter and ripe for a radical leader.
At the same time Roosevelt was repairing Hoover's damage to our economy, Hitler was rebuilding Germany.
