Uranium-lead dating is the standard for any samples with ages ranging from 1 million years to as far back as 4.5 billion years. see the link below, but i leave it to you to learn and be able to tell what its use is...

Hi Usually it's the other way around. Rock layers contain fossils which are dated by how far down in the layer they are. Using Carbon-14 as a gauge will not get you back to fossil ages.
