Why are there emissions released in the production stage of solar cells?

Yes solar cells are made primarily of gallium arsenide in a matrix of silicon. Their manufacture generates heavy metal toxic waste. Solar cells need relatively large amounts of space in order to generate any appreciable amount of electricity. One of the things few people realize about solar cells is that because they are so fragile, they are easily damage by severe weather, easily vandalized, and the potential of arsenic contamination is both real and a danger if these units are extensively used in urban, densely populated areas.

mbs 1960 gave a good answer. That is why I like solar turbine electric generation that turn sun energy into steam at 90 % efficiency as apposed to 10% for PV.
