My neighbor has a yard full of little well behaved ladies. He is from the Ukrane, and I don't understand a word he says, so I;m interested to know what kind of chickens they are. They are about 6 pounds and are solid black with a red head. What's the breed?.

I think I may have found the answer to this question. By cross referencing breeds common in the Ukraine, I've found a little known breed called the "Welsummer"... In particular, the partridge red/black welsummer. Mind, there's a couple dozen varieties of this chicken, and it proved near impossible to find an adequate online photo of this breed in this color mix.

However, I've added a couple of links with photos that should be good enough to decide if this is your bird. They are common in the Ukraine, weigh in at around six pounds, maybe a little heavier, and the partridge red/black welsummer has black plumage with a distinctly red head.

Is This IT????

Sounds like they could be Black Australorps, or Black Orphingtons, which is where the Black Australorps came from. This site is brilliant, with lots of photos. Have a look, you might find your neighbours breed.

If they yell out,

"HOLD ON THERE, BOY! I SAY, I SAY, I SAY HOOOOOLD ON THERE!"

they are a Foghorn Leghorn.
