if there is a heaven, your best bet is to live a short sin free life to increase the odds of getting in. If there is no heaven, when you die you will have gained and lost nothing. So what's the point?

I honestly dont udnerstand what Jesus has to do with anything. If you believe that accepting Jesus will get you into heaven, wouldn't it make sense just to accept Jesus and die right after?

As long as you are living, might as well make the best of it, religious or not.

In the first place, we are sinful in the womb when we are first conceived, so the only sin free human life was that of Jesus Christ. That is why he was able to ransom us from being Adam's decendants, because he gave up the only thing that could be equal to what Adam lost for all of us--perfect human life. Once that ransom has been applied to all of us who choose to follow God's will and accept it, we will be able to live forever in perfect conditions here on earth the way God intended. "thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven" Count on it--its a promise.

"Why does life on earth matter? Regardless of belief?"
....because it matters what you believe. If you don't believe that mankind has been created by a God who will hold each of us responsible for what we did in regards to Jesus then you are not going to stand in the judgment.
If you don't believe that there is a divine purpose for you being here on earth then you might as well live any way that you choose to live and devote your life to getting as much personal enjoyment out of it as you can with no regard to others since we are all just a cosmic accident.

We are here for God's purpose. Jesus is the way.
We cannot live sin free, God knew that and sent His Son as a sacrificial gift for us so we can make it tot he heaven if we want to.
Heaven and hell are real places, believe it or not. I chose heaven.

There are some things that matter. Justice matters. Love matters. Goodness matters.1 Corinthians 13:13
And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

The point is that the Church has a lot of money to gain if you stay alive and tithe.

this life just gives us the choice of our eternal life, but we always can make the most of it while we are here, with family and friends, but the choices bad or good are ours

The better question would be "Why do we as humans need a REASON to exist?"
