Its all about passing the tape test (which I believe the standards were just loosened on them). Back in the day, I passed the tape test when I was 30 lbs over the weight standard. Of course, they have changed how they tape females, and now I can only be like 5lbs over the weight standard to pass. I've lost weight since then, thank god. Talk to a recruiter and ask him to give you one before going to MEPS. It sucks to go through all the other tests only to be told you're over the body fat percentage allowance. They will let you come back and re do a tape test after losing weight if you fail it at MEPS, but it would just be nicer to know if you have to lose a few pounds to join before you go to MEPS for the rest of your training.
Interesting fact: When I first went to MEPS they told me that I had to lose 30 lbs to join. I looked at the standards charts, and I could have joined the Navy on the spot. I think they have looser weight standards in the Navy because fat makes you buoyant.
Don't expect to lose weight in basic. Most people gain. It doesn't seem like you get a lot of food, but you get a ton of calories and fat. Just about everything the military serves in a chowhall is either fried or loaded with sugar, and when you're not eating in the chowhall, you eat MREs three meals a day. One MRE has about 3000 calories and 60 grams of fat, on average. That means you're consuming 9000 calories and 180 grams of fat a day sometimes, and unless you are an A group runner (something like a 5 minute mile pace), you're not really working all that off. I managed to lose about 10 lbs in BCT, but I was really fat when I went in. Only the fattest people in your company will lose any weight in Basic. You don't sound that fat. However, you do tend to gain a lot of muscle in basic no matter what, and that helps you pass the tape test.
Don't worry. If I could do join the Army and make it through Basic, anyone can. Its all a matter of having the right attitude. I was 210 lbs and 5'7" when I went into MEPS the first time. I'm now 150 and 5'8". Good luck!

That seems a little high for being that short... but (at least in the old days) They will prob take you anyway with a waiver initially, and you'll have to drop weight to stay in or they will boot you.. Its not really hard to drop weight in boot camp.. they wont feed you all you wanna eat, and the will run your *** off and make you excersize.. and you dont have a choice about it... consider it the ultimate fat camp.. cuz you cant just walk outta this one LOL
