According to Bride's magazine, "send the invitations out about six weeks before your wedding date", unless your wedding is on a holiday weekend. There are other instructions about "save the date" cards for guests who live out-of-town or state.

Start shopping for invitations 9 months before the wedding if possible and order invitations around 4 to 6 months prior. You will need time to address and send your invitations and allow time for your guests to respond.

You can send out "Save the Date" cards whenever you like before the wedding. These are handy for those guests who will have to travel and book accommodation. But generally most invitations go out around 6-8 weeks before the wedding and teh RSVP date is usually around 4 weeks before teh wedding day.

I have always read that the invitations should be sent out about 5 weeks before the wedding.

I would suggest to send them out at least 2 months before, that way if you have a list of people who are on the would like to invite list or what is known as the B list you may can extend them an invite depending on how many yeahs or nays you get from your original list.

Don't wait too long. Send them out about a month before the big day. You will want to allow for time for them to get there, time for your guests to make arrangements so that they can attend (babysitters, travel, etc.), and enough time for your guests to send back their responses so that you can to give a final head count to your wedding planner or vendors.

One to two months in advance. People need to make arrangements to attend your wedding. This could include:
1. Scheduling time off work
2. Flight / Hotel arrangements
3. Selecting an appropriate gift for you
4. Babysitting / House Watching arrangements

Six to Eight weeks before the wedding. I would send them closer to eight weeks out if you are having lots of out of town guests so that they may begin to make travel arrangements.
