Spend some quality time away with wife and kids, when and where ever we want, our home on wheels our escape to the country at a moments notice. Hitch up and off we go!. But is caravaning more hassel than its worth.? Your thoughts please.?

Go for it...best thing you could ever do...BUT do make sure that you get a caravan that your car is safe to tow...as another answerer said you do need a stabilizer but you will find that modern caravans mostly have stabilizers built into the hitch. We changed our van just over a year ago and had a Powr mover fitted so that we don't have to push the van trying to get it out of our drive (lane is too narrow to hitch up and drive out...and we are getting older!)...it's remote controlled as well.

The caravan club has lots of regional centres and the majority of them have something on almost every weekend, and as well as the larger sites with lots of facilities they have sites which are called certified locations (CL's)where no more than 5 vans can be at any one time...some are very basic and others have toilets/showers and electric hook ups.
BTW...I am female and I am the one in our family who drives the car which tows the van because my husband only has a motorbike licence! As long as your car is capable of safely towing the van, the van is sensibly loaded and not overweight, you have extra door mirrors fitted and whilst driving you make allowance for the fact that you have a longer and wider outfit than you normally drive with, then you should have no problems. Your kids will love it!

We loved caravanning! It's cheaper by far to buy a caravan than a motor home. It's also cheap to buzz off whenever you want to. Kids love it!
The main thing to know is that you must have a stabiliser...we were stupid and didn't realise and had a bad accident. Once we had the stabiliser fitted...no probs.
I'd say definitely go for it!

i'd love a caravan only thing that stops me getting one is i'm the driver and don't think i'd be good with a caravan ,i camp instead and its similar i have everything packed away that i need so if i wanna go i grab it in car and go ,less hassle with caravan i suppose as it can always have everything ready inside it and no fighting a wind trying to put up !
I say go for it and enjoy the weekends whereever you feel like driving to

its a laugh , wherever you live there will be a campsite nearby and on those weekends when you are bored ****-less you can just hook up and have a cheap weekend
AND join the caravan club ,yes i know ........ the first thoughts ,old gits discussing flower arranging ! WRONG the people staff and fellow vanners are friendly and knowledgeable
but there is no aggro, ever, clean loos etc and cheap.
i do a lot of outdoor sports and it means i can do those and take the family

a lot less hassle than a motor-home but a lot more hassle than a decent big tent.kids would enjoy camping more as better fun and less expense than finding sites with hook-ups,etc. tent you can put up almost anywhere,caravans & motor-homes need ammenities.

my advice would be a motor home, all in one no hitching and more comfy in lots of ways, i love them, esp the newer ones all mod cons etc, great fun too. Second hand you can get them for some good prices good luck and do it before you get too old, as life flies by without our noticing these days have fun

Forget it Fella...you think you love your wife and kids right? This is Britain.......picture the scene...it's raining cats and dogs.youv'e paid for the whole weekend at the camp site..the kids are fighting..the windows are all steamed up cos you're trying to dry the coats......There you all are sitting in a 13' x 5' tin can....... need I go on?
