The minute someone says the word "but" to me, I usually stop them. I remind them they are about to cancel out the previous part of the statement completely. IMO, it is usually a word employed by those comfortable with lying through their teeth.
Of course, this depends on context. Perhaps I simply don't care for that word being directed at me.

How about that place was devastated by an earth quake but we have hope.
I met with an accident but I was not injured.
You think "but" is negative but I think it is how we look at it as. So probably its your thinking which is negative but I know you will do great.

'But' means contrariety. If you are talking about something good and then use 'but' it means that something bad happened.
On the other hand, if you are giving bad news and use the word 'but' you could give some hope.
