In the US the Coca-Cola Company introduced Diet Coke with Lemon in 2001 and then Diet Coke with Lime in 2004. Coca-Cola with Lime was introduced in 2005. In other countries Coca-Cola and Coca-Cola Light also have various Lime and Lemon flavorings that were introduced at different times.
All this is really to provide personalized flavors and variations of Coca-Cola and Diet Coke for the different tastes of consumers. It is a good question that the Coca-Cola Company did not introduce a Coca-Cola with Lemon variation, but whether it's lemon or lime. The difference is so slight, that having both Coca-Cola with Lime or Coca-Cola with Lemon probably will not make any difference.
In other countries, Mexico, New Zealand and Japan have Coca-Cola Citra (which is a citrus flavord blend of lemon and lime). Diet Coke with Citra Zest has just released in the UK. In Belgium there is Diet Coke with Sango (orange). In New Zealand, they also had test-marketed both regular and diet Coke with Raspberry.
Not to mention the earlist flavor of Coke - Cherry Coke since 1985 and Vanilla Coke, Black Cherry Vanila Coke, all have diet varieties. In 2006, Coca-Cola Blak - coffee-flavored Coke.
We have not seen the end of the flavors and variations yet. There will be more to come!

Hi Mark,
I guess it is because it sells more.
I personally cannot abide the muck, give me a Jack Daniels & regular Coke every time ! With a couple of dodgy ice cubes.
Folks seem to be very "health concerned" at the moment, but I cannot beleive that the addition of a synthetic citrus flavour is of any health value.
Purely a commercial effort.

Cheers !
Bob.

I would imagine it is because of the taste-diet soda is so bland, that maybe it was suggested by consumers-also, lemons are beneficial to diets
