Use your cell phone to phone yourself as a beep is evident to the other caller and say you have to go as you are expecting an important call. OR
Use your cell phone to call them and hope they answer the beep and when they return say that you actually have to run. OR
Go and ring the doorbell and hopefully they will hear and pause. OR
Use a lighter to set off the fire alarm. OR
Be as rude as them and loudly interrupt and say you have to go. OR
Hang up and when they phone back say your cordless died and it will again so you can't talk!
hope that gives you some ideas!

Lay the phone down, go do something for awhile. Check back after a few minutes, repeat

I have a friend like that. I put down the phone and took care of a pressing bodily function. When I returned, she was still talking and hadn't noticed my absence.

click the phone and say, oops I have a call coming in and hang up. Or open a drawer and drop the phone in and walk by once in awhile and go ummm and go about your business.

I like butting in and using "Well, that's great (cool, bummer, etc.). I guess I'll let you go now." (the key here, being that "they" have to go)
Another one is that you're cooking/making coffee/running a bath...something that requires your prompt return to it (thus getting off the phone)

I'd tell the caller that someone is at your door & that you have to go now.
or:
If you have call waiting & the caller knows it, tell him that you've got another call coming in & you have to go. If he continues to jabber, then hit the receiver & then hang up.

When my aunt used to phone, my mum would make me go and ring the doorbell.

Who cares about diplomacy? Say "I gotta go take a dump" and hang up. No big deal.
Or, claim that the connection is bad and say "Repeat that please, you're coming in broken and stupid". Click.
Don't fuss over it.

Just hang up. No excuses or explanations, just "I gotta go" and do it. Don't wait for a pause, just interrupt him and if he keeps talking just hang up.
